We're not writing this to scare anyone. Most sports mouth injuries look far worse than they are, mostly because lips and gums bleed dramatically. But a few of them are genuinely time-sensitive, and the difference between saving a tooth and losing it often comes down to what happened in the car on the way home.

Start by getting a clear look. Rinse the mouth gently with warm water, use gauze or a clean cloth with steady pressure to slow bleeding, and put a cold compress on the outside of the lip or cheek. Once the blood is cleared, you can usually tell what you're dealing with.

Bleeding that won't slow after fifteen minutes of firm pressure, a jaw that won't close correctly, or any injury that came with a blow to the head belongs at urgent care or the emergency room first. Teeth can wait a couple of hours. Heads and airways cannot.

A Knocked-Out Baby Tooth Is a Different Situation

This is the one that surprises parents. If a young child knocks out a baby tooth, do not try to put it back in. Reimplanting a primary tooth can damage the permanent tooth developing above it. After the Emergency Comes the Repair
